Registration Holds

International students have several unique service indicators in PeopleSoft/APLUS.

  • AI: “Determine Current Visa Status” hold. Placed by ISSS. Will prevent registration (more info below).
  • IL: All international students will have this service indicator. It is for identification purposes only and will not prevent registration.
  • AZ: Placed by the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP). Indicates that the student has some English language-related requirements to fulfill.
  • AG immunization hold: Placed by Boynton Health during the first semester. Indicates that the student must complete the UMN’s immunization requirement.

ISSS New Student Requirements for Removal of AI Hold

For permanent removal of the AI “Determine Current Visa Status” registration hold, all new international undergraduates will need to complete a list of ISSS requirements. This list, the New Global Gopher Required Tasks, covers pre- and post-arrival tasks to satisfy visa requirements and to prepare students for their transition to the University of Minnesota and the U.S. These tasks include ISSS Check-In and IPrep, the two previous requirements for AI hold removal.

Each student’s AI hold will have an effective date of August 28, 2024; it will not prevent students from registering for classes during new student orientation. Undergraduate students will continue to have the option to register remotely during a virtual advising session in June or July, or they may register during an in-person orientation session in August after they have arrived on campus. The hold will go into effect on August 28, 2024, at which point students who have not completed the Required Tasks list will NOT be able to modify their registration or enroll in the following semester until they have completed the list.

Please note: Just because the AI hold is on the student’s record does not mean it is blocking registration! Advisors should check the “Effective Date” of the AI hold — if the “Effective Date” is in the future, the hold is not currently preventing registration.
