Orientation for J-1 Exchange Visitors

International Student and Scholar Services hosts a weekly orientation for J-1 exchange visitors in the professor, research scholar, and short-term scholar categories, and their family members.

J-1 Exchange Visitors can find their “Category” in item 4 on page 1 of their DS-2019.

The objectives of the orientation are to provide participants with:

  • A clear understanding of the services that ISSS provides to J-1 exchange visitors and their families
  • Helpful answers to questions regarding adjustment to life at the University of Minnesota and in the greater Twin Cities community
  • Appropriate referrals to other organizations, on and off campus, which have the role of providing assistance regarding specific issues

Weekly orientations begin at 11:00 a.m. and lasts no more than 1 hour. Spouses and children are welcome. Contact the ISSS Welcome Center at 612-626-7100 to register for an orientation. If family members will attend, please indicate how many, as space is limited.

Participants are encouraged to ask questions at the orientation. During the week in advance of the orientation, participants are invited to email their questions to [email protected]. Indicate “Scholar Orientation” as the email subject. Providing a list of questions will help ISSS staff to better assist participants. Each exchange visitor will be given a packet of materials including the Twin Cities transit and entertainment maps and information on topics such as enhancing English language skills, campus libraries, and day care and school options.

ISSS staff look forward to meeting newly arrived exchange visitors and their families at the orientation. By achieving the objectives of this orientation, ISSS is assisting exchange visitors to accomplish “the goals that brought them to the University” — part of the ISSS mission.
