New Scholars

Before You Arrive

Get a Visa

J entry visas can only be obtained outside of the United States at a U.S. embassy or consulate. 

When to Arrive

You can arrive up to 30 days before and 25 days after the Start Date on your documents.

Find Housing

There are a variety of housing options available both on-campus and off-campus.

Health Insurance

You are required to purchase UMN health insurance for you and your dependents.

Prepare for Arrival

Learn more about entering the U.S. and finding transportation from the airport.

After You Arrive

Change of Address

You must notify your J-1 sponsor within 10 days of changing your residential address.

ISSS Check-In

This mandatory process verifies your arrival and proper immigration status.

Hosting Department Check-In

You will need to check in with your hosting department after completing your ISSS Check-In.

Orientation

ISSS hosts an orientation for H-1B, TN, and E-3 employees and J-1 exchange visitors in the Professor, Research Scholar, and Short-term Scholar categories.
