It is essential that you take action to remove the registration holds that are on your student record before your registration time. You will not be allowed to register for classes until these holds are removed.

Most international students have two or more holds on their records as part of admission to the University.

Below is a list of holds you should know about and instructions about their removal.

Expand all

AI Hold (Determine Visa Status)

Placed by International Student and Scholar Services

Complete the International Student Preparation Course and the ISSS Check-In through MyISSS after you arrive in the U.S.

Undergraduate students will also need to complete a mid-semester program for new international students (see NIS hold below) before registering for future semesters.

AZ Hold (ESL, English/Second Language)

Placed by Minnesota English Language Program

To remove this, you may need to take an English proficiency test or register for a class. Review the English Proficiency page for more information.

MG and MJ Holds (Grad School Final Degree Transcript and Master Transcript)

Placed by The Graduate School

This hold indicates that the Graduate School needs a transcript or other record to complete your admission file. Learn more at

FE and SFI Holds (Financial Aid-Ineligible Plan and Not Eligible for Payment Plan)

Non-degree students only

Non-degree students do not need to resolve the FE/SFI holds. These holds are only for administrative purposes only, and they will not prevent you from registering at your appointed time.

Non-degree students should resolve any other holds that are on their record.

NIS Hold

Placed by International Student and Scholar Services

All new international undergraduate students must complete the New International Student Seminar (NISS) program during their first semester. This hold will only be placed on your record if you do not complete NISS by the deadline. More information will be emailed to students after the start of the semester. You can also review the New International Student Seminar webpage for more information.

Immunization Hold

All students must submit the UMN's Immunization Form. Review Boynton Health's information about the University of Minnesota's immunization requirements.
