You may have questions about extending or changing CPT. Review the information below. If you still have questions, please contact an ISSS advisor.
Remember! ISSS takes 10 business days to process PDF-based I-20 requests.
Extending CPT with the same employer
I want to extend the CPT authorization with my current employer by 30 days or less. What should I do?
ISSS allows one extension request of up to 30 days on a current CPT authorization.
You need to send the appropriate document from the following list to [email protected] to request a CPT extension.
- Required Internship: A letter from your college or department verifying your need to extend the internship to complete your academic program requirement. The letter must clearly state the new end date.
- Co-op: Either a letter from UMN co-op office or a revised co-op agreement that approves the co-op extension requirement. The letter or agreement must clearly state the new end date. NOTE: EE 5041 does not allow extensions.
- Elective Internship/Employment: Contact with your CPT course instructor to complete and sign the CPT Course Instructor Change Authorization form.
I want to extend the CPT authorization with my current employer for more than 30 days. What should I do?
ISSS considers extensions of more than 30 days to be a significant change from the original CPT authorization. Therefore, you must submit a new CPT Request through MyISSS. You do not need to complete the ISSS CPT Online Workshop again; you can submit a copy of the same completion email you submitted with your original application.
Are you extending Elective CPT? You must add a new CPT course registration or at least 1 credit to your current CPT course registration.
Ending CPT employment early
I want to end my CPT employment early. What should I do?
Contact ISSS to talk with an advisor about your specific situation. In general, ISSS cannot change, void, or restore CPT once it has been authorized.
Changing/adding CPT employers
If the change does not require an extension OR an extension of 30 days or less:
Meet your CPT course instructor to complete and sign the CPT Course Instructor Change Authorization form.
Send the signed Change Authorization form to [email protected].
ISSS will issue a new I-20 to you with the new employer information in 10 business days. You must have the new I-20 in your hands before you can begin to work for the new employer.
If the change includes an extension of more than 30 days:
ISSS considers extensions of more than 30 days to be a significant change from the original CPT authorization. Therefore, you must submit a new CPT Request through MyISSS. You do not need to complete the ISSS CPT Online Workshop again; you can submit a copy of the same completion email you submitted with your original application.
Are you extending Elective CPT? You must add a new CPT course registration or at least 1 credit to your current CPT course registration.
