Office Hours and Walk–In Advising for F and J Visa Holders

Will You Be Traveling Outside of the U.S. This Winter? Check If You Will Need a New Travel Signature

All international must have a valid travel signature on their I-20/DS-2019 to reenter the United States. Travel signatures must be obtained from ISSS, and they are valid for 1 year or until the end date on your I-20/DS-2019, whichever is sooner. If you need an updated travel signature, there are three options:

  1. Request a Travel I-20/DS-2019 through MyISSS: ISSS requires 7 business days to process these requests; you should use one of the other options if you need your document sooner or if you have one of the following holds: probation, grad dissertation, or financial.
  2. Come to a Travel Signature Session: Come to the ISSS office (190 Humphrey) to get a new Travel Signature on December 12 (1:30-4:00 p.m.). Your wait time will be shorter than during walk-ins, but be aware that you will be asked to return at a different time if you have other questions.
  3. Come During Walk-Ins: ISSS advisors can sign Travel Signatures during Walk-In Hours. Please be prepared to wait as ISSS becomes busier at the end of each semester.

For additional information on traveling outside the U.S., please visit our travel information pages on the ISSS website.

Walk-Ins Cancelled on December 12

Walk-ins will be cancelled on December 12 for ISSS’s Travel Signature Session (review the previous item). ISSS advisers will not be available to discuss items not related to travel signatures, however, documents can still be picked up. Please adjust your schedules accordingly.

"Let's Talk" Sessions Happening in ISSS Through December 16

Let’s Talk is a support service that provides informal drop-in consultations at locations around campus. Let's Talk sessions are occurring at ISSS on Mondays through December 16 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. with Chia Chen Tu, a counselor who speaks Mandarin and will do bi-lingual counseling. If you are interested in meeting with Chia-Chen, come to ISSS in 190 Humphrey School and tell the front desk staff you are there for Let's Talk.

Let's Talk counselors can listen to specific problems (such as stress, relationships and academic performance), provide support, help explore solutions and give information about other resources. Let’s Talk is free, confidential, no appointment needed and open to all students at the University of Minnesota. To learn more or review the other locations around campus, visit

Please Note:

  • There may be a wait to meet with an advisor during Walk-Ins. Please prepare for this, and we appreciate your understanding.
  • You should make an appointment if you wish to meet with a specific advisor. Not all of our advisors are available during Walk-Ins on any given day.
  • We may close walk-ins early if we have more people than can be seen during the allotted time.

* Sponsored Student Walk-Ins are on Monday and Thursday: 1:30-4:00 p.m. Sponsored students should only come to ISSS on these days for Walk-ins.

To schedule an appointment with an F/J/H visa advisor or counselor, or to request a disability-related accommodation, please contact our Welcome Center in 190 Humphrey School by calling 612-626-7100. Regular appointments generally last up to 30 minutes, but if you feel you need more time, ask for a longer appointment. Please allow two weeks advance notice if you are requesting additional accommodations. ISSS does not schedule same-day appointments.

Office Hours

ISSS is open during the hours listed.

If you wish to meet with an advisor, you should make an appointment at the Welcome Center or come during Walk-in Hours. Documents can be picked up at any time during these periods; no appointment is required unless otherwise specified.

ISSS closes for lunch every day from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Documents cannot be picked up during this time.

Definition of a "Business Day"

Calendar showing the example
(click for pdf)

When accepting visa requests, we often state, “ISSS takes 7 business days to issue a new document.” What is this?

A business day is a day when ISSS is open.

ISSS starts counting business days when the office opens on the business day after the request is received. Business days are usually Monday through Friday. Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) are not business days, and days the office is closed are also not business days.

  • ISSS receives your request on a Tuesday (the 1st day of the month). The following Monday is a holiday so the office will be closed. Your document will be available on the following Friday (the 11th day of the month). Review the calendar graphic here.

NOTE: ISSS cannot back-date an authorization (write a date earlier than when it should be authorized).

The International Student and Scholar Services office is in the Humphrey School of Public Affairs on the West Bank of the Twin Cities campus.  The Welcome Center is in 190 Humphrey, located on the first floor of the hallway connecting the Humphrey School to Heller Hall. Maps and additional information are available here.
