Hi everyone, I’m Doris from Taiwan. I use she/her/hers pronouns. I’m a freshman undergraduate student in the College of Education and Human Development, currently an undeclared major. This is my first year as an international student in Minnesota. Everything around me is new, and I’m excited to create more memorable experiences here.

My life motto is, “I hope I can hold up an umbrella for others when it rains.” My advice to you is: It’s okay not to be okay. The most important thing is to take the next step. Ask questions and reach out for help if you need it. It’s not a sign of weakness but of bravery.

AND ISSS is here for you! You don’t have to be perfect at first. The more important thing is to grow and learn at the university. Feel free to use all the resources available at the university to guide and support your life here.

Hi everyone! My name is Gulzira, and I'm from Uzbekistan. I use she/her/hers pronouns. I'm a senior undergraduate student studying Political Science and Business Economics at the University of Minnesota. As an international student, moving to Minnesota has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Living and studying in a new country has challenged me to grow, become more independent, and build meaningful connections with people from around the world.

My life motto is, "Growth begins when you step outside your comfort zone." My advice to you is: don't be afraid to ask for help or try something new. Everyone starts somewhere, and it's completely okay not to have everything figured out. Every question you ask and every challenge you overcome helps you grow.

Nigeria

Hi everyone, I'm Jason from Abuja, Nigeria. I'm a Computer Engineering student here at the U of M. Coming to Minnesota was one of the biggest transitions of my life, a new country, a new campus, a new everything, and figuring that out while keeping up academically taught me a lot about resilience and leaning on the people and resources around you.
Outside of my studies, I enjoy drawing, cooking, and binge-watching series, probably all three on the same day if I'm being honest. I know firsthand how much it means to have someone in your corner when you're just starting out here, and that's exactly what drives me to be part of this community.
My advice to you: reach out early. Whether it's to a classmate, an advisor, or an office like ISSS, don't wait until you're overwhelmed to ask for help. The resources are here, and so are the people. Use them.

Liam Taha

Undergraduate Student

Hello there!!!
My name is Liam Taha, I'm a sponsored student perusing a finance degree in Carlson. I've spent a fair amount of my youth moving in between different countries and was able to experience many different cultures!
Before I began working with ISSS I would visit the office often for inquiries and help with my sponsorship. And they have always made sure to offer me the help and support I needed.
And as a sponsored student myself, I can understand the pressure that many other students might feel regarding their credits, grades, majors...etc.

My advice to all current/upcoming students is to "Maximize all the university has to offer" that includes using office hours, attending university events, joining student groups...etc.

ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE!
