Global Gopher Events

Start your UMN experience off in the best way possible by attending Global Gopher Events!

During Global Gopher Events, you will learn how to succeed academically at the University of Minnesota and how to prepare for a career after graduation! Most of all, we hope to welcome you to the University of Minnesota and the international community.

Why should you join us? Students say Global Gopher Events was where they met their best friends and started their adventure at the U!

This is a special opportunity for new international students to prepare for classes, make new friends, and discover all of the amazing services the University offers with advice from international student leaders.

Join Us Online in August!

Join us where you will virtually make new friends with new international students from all around the world while learning how to succeed at the UMN and discovering some of the campus resources that will help you academically and personally during your time at the university.

All of the events will be at 8:00-9:30 a.m. CST (remember to convert this to your local time zone). The Global Gopher Events schedule includes exciting workshops and events just for new international students!

  • Global Gopher Events Kickoff and the Official Welcome from ISSS (August 25): Join this virtual international student panel. The group will welcome you and give you tips on how to enjoy your first weeks at the University (and for undergraduates, how to make the most of Welcome Week). Join us for live, small group discussions.
  • How to be a successful student using University of Minnesota resources (August 26): There are a lot of useful resources at the University of Minnesota. Come to this session where UMN staff will share tips and suggestions for how you can succeed during the Fall semester.
  • How to be a leader at the University of Minnesota (August 27): With more than 1,000 student groups, there are a lot of ways to get involved at the University of Minnesota. We have asked our current student leaders to share their recommendations for ways to get involved along with additional leadership opportunities and programming. We will also have time for small group discussions.
  • Additional programming: We are hosting additional virtual gatherings for international students who identify as any of the following: LGBTQIA students, Muslim students, Black-identifying International Students, and Latinx students. These gatherings will be opportunities to meet other peers along with UMN staff to ask questions and share your experiences. To sign up, please state the appropriate group when you register for Global Gopher Events.

For Undergraduate students, GGE is partnering with Welcome Week (Wednesday, September 1-Monday, September 6, 2021)!

NOTE: All Global Gopher Events are optional, and they are separate from (and do not replace) any of your orientation requirements including Welcome Week or Freshman/Transfer Orientation. All new international students are encouraged (but not required) to participate in Global Gopher Events.
