There are two parts to the ISSS Check-In and Welcome Session.
Step 1: Check-In with ISSS
Federal regulations require that new F-1 and J-1 international students report their arrival to their University. Login to MyISSS and complete the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” e-form to submit your immigration documents and notify ISSS of your arrival. This must be completed as soon as possible after your arrival in the U.S.
Before starting the e-form you will need to prepare scanned copies or pictures of the following immigration documents. To avoid complications and delays, ensure the text on the images of your documents is legible and the complete document is visible in the image.
- I-20 or DS-2019
- Passport biographical page
- F-1 or J-1 visa (except citizens of Canada)
- Most recent I-94 record of entry to the U.S. (This will be accessible online after you enter the United States)
Step 2: Complete an ISSS Welcome Session
After submitting your immigration documents for your ISSS Check-In (Step 1), you must complete an ISSS Welcome Session. This session will contain important information for your visa status and action items you will need to complete before you begin classes.
Depending on your student status, you may complete this requirement in-person or online. Select your student status below for full details of how to complete your ISSS Welcome Session
Please note: The International Student Preparation Course and the ISSS Welcome Session are separate items, and your AI registration hold will not be permanently removed until you complete both.
First-year (freshmen) undergraduate students
All international freshmen will register for an on-campus orientation in August through the New Student Checklist. You will attend your ISSS Welcome Session in person on the morning of your on-campus orientation.
Transfer undergraduate students
Undergraduate transfer students will attend an in-person ISSS Welcome Session on August 31. You will sign up for this session through the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” e-form in MyISSS after you arrive in the U.S. The ISSS Welcome Session will finish shortly before Transfer Welcome Week begins.
Transfer undergraduate students who are not able to arrive in Minnesota by August 31 will complete an online ISSS Welcome Session. The link to the online Welcome Session will be available in the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” e-form (see Step 1).
Graduate and professional school students
Graduate and professional school students who are admitted for Summer 2022 will complete the ISSS Welcome Session online. The link to the online course will be accessed through the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” e-form in MyISSS (see Step 1).
Students admitted for Fall 2022 have the option of attending an in-person ISSS Welcome Session or completing an online Welcome Session. Links to both the online course and the reservation system for the in-person sessions will be available through MyISSS on the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” form. Space in the in-person sessions will be limited.
Non-degree/exchange students will complete the Welcome Session fully online. You will access this link through MyISSS on the “ISSS Check-in and Welcome Session” form.
