Information About Fall 2021 for New International Students

Have you already taken 1+ semester at the University of Minnesota? Review our information for continuing international students.

Welcome to the University of Minnesota!

We are excited you will be attending the University of Minnesota this fall. All of our campuses (Crookston, Duluth, Morris, Rochester and the Twin Cities) are planning to return to fully on-campus operations this fall.

ISSS and our campus partners are diligently working to attend to unique challenges encountered by international students and scholars.

We recognize that some new international students have significant challenges and barriers in coming to Minnesota. While there have been some positive announcements, questions remain regarding the scheduling of visa appointments, the availability of flights from various countries, and the options for students in countries that have travel restrictions. Additionally, some international students are in areas of the world where the COVID-19 situation is getting worse, so we know you are concerned about the health and safety of you and your family.

ISSS wants you to have the information available about your options. This will allow you and your families to decision about what is best for your Fall 2021 plans.

We developed this webpage to give you access to the current information. Please be aware that this information may change as we approach the start of the semester and more decisions are made. We will regularly update the information as new information becomes available. Please read the emails sent to you by ISSS and other departments, and you should complete the International Student Preparation Course.

Get Answers to Your Questions

ISSS has created a Frequently Asked Questions for New International Students that will be updated in response to the questions we receive from international students and scholars. If you have questions that are not answered here, please email We will be happy to answer your question or connect you to the appropriate office.

NOTE: It may take ISSS staff a few days to determine what any announcement means within the context of the UMN's fall 2021 plans. We often do not get advanced notice of visa-related matters, so we learn about them at the same time you do. Please review this section regularly and read any emails you receive from ISSS and other departments at the University of Minnesota.
