University of Minnesota Alumnus Appointed Head of the University of Hong Kong

University of Minnesota alumnus Xiang Zhang recently began his new post as the 16th president of the University of Hong Kong. A renowned scientist, Xiang Zhang has studied at Nanjing University in mainland China, the University of Minnesota, and the University of California–Berkeley.

When he earned his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Minnesota in 1992, Xiang Zhang studied under Professor David Pui. "Xiang Zhang was a creative student and pursued his research with passion and hard work," says Pui. "He was always curious about how things worked. It was a joy for me to work with him during his M.S. degree period.

Xiang Zhang has been featured in Time Magazine, Discover Magazine, and R&D Magazine, as well as in international media outlets such as the BBC, CNN, ABC, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Before taking his latest position at the University of Hong Kong, he worked as faculty and on research teams at the University of California–Los Angeles and Pennsylvania State University.
