Need-Based Academic Support assists degree-seeking international students enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities who have experienced financial hardship due to unforeseen circumstances. Priority is given to students in the final stages of their degree program. Depending on a student’s situation and need, Need-Based Academic Support can help with tuition, fees, and insurance costs.
Below is the criteria. Meeting these criteria does not guarantee that you will receive ISSS funding.
You must be able to document that the financial support stated on your visa document/s changed unexpectedly and due to circumstances beyond your control.
You must be admitted and enrolled full-time in a degree program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Graduate students enrolled in Grad 999 are not eligible to receive any funding.
Your cumulative GPA must be at least 2.5 for undergraduates and at least 3.0 for students in graduate or professional school programs.
You must be in legal F-1 or J- 1 student status, and you must have held this status for at least 12 months while attending the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
You must have completed at least 48 credits if you are an undergraduate student, 12 credits if a graduate student, or 24 credits if an professional student.
Need-Based Academic Support funding may be received for only one degree program and one major during your studies at the U of MN. Students in Bachelor or Doctoral degree programs may be eligible to receive funding for a maximum of two years; students in a Master's degree program may receive up to one year of funding.
While receiving Need-Based Academic Support funding, you must register for credits and grades on an A/F or S/N grading basis.
Need-Based Academic Support applications are not renewed automatically. Students must reapply by the deadline for subsequent semesters and meet the eligibility and funding criteria for each semester they seek funding. Receiving funding for one semester does not guarantee that it will be renewed.
Priority is given to students who are employed and submit an Verification of Employment form. Students should remain employed if awarded ISSS funding.
You will need to submit the following documents with your application. All of the documents must include a date stating they are from within 30 days of your application.
You must fill complete the Financial Information form, including information about the semester you are requesting funding and the two previous semesters.
The Verification of Source of Funds form is required and must be completed by your source of funds according to your visa/immigration documents. We require that this form contains a Stamp or Seal of Notary Public or Court Official certifying signature in order to be considered complete. This stamp, seal, or signature can be obtained in your home country. Forms without this step will not be accepted.
All of your bank and credit card statements for the previous 12 months must be included and converted into one file before uploading.
There is a priority deadline at the beginning of each semester. If you miss the deadline, you may still submit your application. ISSS will accept and process requests for financial assistance until funds are exhausted. Incomplete or partial applications will not be accepted.
