Gabi Schmiegel has been with ISSS in different capacities since 1995. As Director of Sponsored Student programs, she is the liaison between the University and foreign governments as well as programming organizations such as IIE, LASPAU, AMIDEAST, IREX, American Councils and World Learning, to name a few. She also works with public and private scholarship providers such as JPA, MARA, Petronas, Aramco Services, SABIC and many more.
She provides ongoing individualized services to about 300 sponsored students at the University ranging from application support and administering institutional cost share to personal counseling and advising. She administers a budget of close to $500,000 in an effort to recruit and retain highly qualified international sponsored students to the University. She also is a member of the ISSS crisis counseling team. In 2009, Gabi received the President’s Award for Outstanding Service to the University by then President Bruininks. The same year she was also honored by the Latin American Student Association. In 2010, she received the Excellence in Service Award from the International Fellowship Office at the Humphrey School for Public Affairs.
She provides training on the national level for international education professionals on best practices in administering sponsored student programs and is frequently called upon to consult with professionals at other universities who want to establish positions to provide targeted services to sponsored students. In addition, she is a frequent trainer on the regional and national level on immigration regulations and intercultural communication.
Originally from Germany, Gabi came to the Minnesota as a University exchange student from the Freie University of Berlin. She received her Masters degree in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. Before coming to Minnesota, Gabi was an intern with Senator Dianne Feinstein at her district office in San Francisco for three months
Gabi is a frequent traveler to the Middle East where she has visited Libya, Iraq, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the Sultanate of Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. She speaks German, English, Arabic, French and some Spanish.
