Important Documents

The DS-2019, DS-7002, and your passport and entry visa are important legal documents.

Two-Year Rule

Some visa holders are required to return home for at least two years after their program.

12 Month Bar

You may not be allowed to participate in other J-1 programs for 12 months after your student-intern program.

Violation of Status

You must comply with visa regulations. Not doing so could result in the loss of legal status.

Extension of Status

An extension is possible if your faculty mentor decides you need to continue your training activities.

Transfer Procedures

You must follow these procedures to transfer to or from the University of Minnesota.

Departure from the U.S.

ISSS is required to notify SEVIS when a visitor ends their program, transfers, or changes visa status.

Travel Within the U.S.

Travel within the United States and to U.S. territories is not restricted.

Travel Outside the U.S.

You will need certain documents to re-enter the U.S.

Travel by J-2 Dependents

J-2 dependents may travel with or without the J-1 primary visa holder.

Work Options

You may not find work outside UMN or receive payment that is not directly related to your internship.

Dependents

Your spouse and children younger than 21 are eligible to accompany you to the U.S.

Prospective Student-Interns

J-1 student-interns are enrolled in a university abroad and come to the UMN for the purpose of training in their major.
