Exchange Students: English Requirements

The University of Minnesota requires all non-native English speakers to demonstrate a command of the English language that is necessary for success in college level classes taught in English. Applicants are required to submit results from the English language proficiency tests listed below.

Students who have completed two years of university study in an English-speaking country can be waived from test requirements.

TOEFL 79 iBT with writing sub-score of 21
  • Students with TOEFL scores 68-78 or writing sub-scores below 21 may be nominated for admission only to the College of Liberal Arts, and they will be required to either take an English placement test on arrival or register for an ESL academic writing course before further course registration is allowed. There is no additional cost for ESL courses, and they earn credit toward full-time course load minimums.
  • The TOEFL ITP (institutional test) is not accepted.
