ISSS Career Support is designed to assist international students and scholars in preparing for their job search in order to reach their career goals. ISSS offers workshops and individual appointments to guide international students who are planning to search for jobs in the U.S.

Topics include:

  • Introduction to job search process in the U.S.
  • Cultural expectations in writing resume and interviewing in the U.S.
  • Understanding work authorization and how to address your visa status to the potential employers

We encourage students to contact the Career Services in their college to find out what services are available to them.

Individual Appointments with an ISSS Adviser

ISSS offers appointments for Resume Critiques, Practice Job Interviews, and Job Search Strategies to guide international students who are planning to search for jobs in the United States. We can also discuss cultural differences and how to address your visa status in the job search process. Career appointments are for one hour and are held at the ISSS office located in 190 Humphrey School.

Work Authorization for International Students

Visa Workshops

ISSS Career Support organizes workshops each semester to inform international students about work authorization options in the United States. The H-1B Visa Workshop and the Employment-based Visas and Permanent Residency (also called "green card") Workshop are repeated each fall and spring. These in-person workshops are delivered by immigration lawyers in the Twin Cities. Students have the chance to ask questions during and after the workshops. Links to the slides from recent workshops are provided below.

We also work with UMN student groups to provide information workshops about F-1 or J-1 student visa employment options, including Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and STEM OPT. If you have a group request, please contact to inquire about a workshop for your group.
