Reporting a Change from Nonimmigrant to Permanent Resident Status

The Process

When you change status (known as “adjusting status”) from a nonimmigrant status (such as F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2, H-1B, H-4, etc) to Permanent Residence (PR) status, you should do the following:

Students

  1. If you are working on campus, contact your I-9/Payroll Administrator in your employing Department to show your original permanent resident (green) card and do a new Form I-9 online to update your visa status for Payroll purposes.
  2. Contact the Admissions Office regarding resident-rate tuition issues.
  3. Send a copy of your permanent resident card to isss@umn.edu so we can update your student codes in the University record system (Peoplesoft) and terminate your SEVIS record, if applicable.

Employees

  1. Contact your I-9/Payroll Administrator in your employing Department to show your original permanent resident (green) card and do a new Form I-9 online to update your visa status for Payroll purposes.
  2. Send a copy of your permanent resident card to an H-1B advisor at ISSS in order to remove you from ISSS records and from SEVIS, if applicable.

ISSS Services for Permanent Residents

ISSS primarily serves students, faculty and staff on non-immigrant visas. Persons who already hold Permanent Residence status are treated like U.S. citizens by the University in terms of eligibility for employment and access to services.  Permanent residents who are new to the United States may benefit from some of the resources available on the ISSS website, and can contact the Immigration Response Team with immigration-related questions.

Review USCIS's website for Permanent Residence rights, responsibilities and procedures.
