Dr. Vitaliy Shyyan

Vitaliy Shyyan

Dr. Vitaliy Shyyan, originally from Ukraine, is a Research Associate at the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) at the Institute on Community Integration (ICI) in the College of Education and Human Development. Dr. Shyyan works with state departments of education to improve the accessibility of assessments for diverse students, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and English language learners with disabilities. Dr. Shyyan has made a number of significant contributions in his short time at NCEO, namely:

  • Providing leadership for the center’s internal and external evaluation efforts
  • Conducting research and evaluation that informs the improvement of accountability assessments in states and consortia
  • Conducting appropriate validation measures for instruments developed for data collection and analysis
  • Authoring or collaborating with project personnel to author reports, journal articles, book chapters, and other publications and products
  • Designing and delivering technical assistance to states and assessment consortia
  • Collecting data on accessibility features for new assessments
  • Facilitating engaging meetings and presentations
  • Serving as co-principal investigator for a project that entails
    development of accessibility and accommodation materials to
    improve assessment outcomes for diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrating overall outstanding leadership at the center

Dr. Shyyan has also contributed to his work community by serving on the ICI Kickoff Committee (an employee appreciation event), which was focused on a diversity theme. Dr. Shyyan’s expertise in intercultural education was a true asset, and with his leadership and guidance, the event was focused and engaging. In addition, his flair with audiences really stood out, as he also facilitated part of the event, which received much positive feedback.

Dr. Shyyan’s depth of knowledge, intercultural perspective, and understanding of domestic and international education policy have proven invaluable to the work of the center.
