Mission
“University community learning through the experience and knowledge of international students.”
ISSS introduced the “Culture Corps” program as a way to enlist students in our efforts to internationalize the campus. Faculty members or University staff and international students work together with ISSS staff to develop a Culture Corps project. Project proposals are reviewed by the Culture Corps committee and if selected for implementation, funding is awarded to the student in the form of a stipend. In addition to receiving a stipend for their efforts, international students gain the experience and skills involved in creating and coordinating distinct and challenging projects. The University community benefits from the unique cultural experience, knowledge and skills that international students provide. Since Culture Corps began in 1998, over 150 diverse projects have been implemented. Projects can occur within or outside of the classroom, and vary widely in their scope and focus.
Quote: “Being a part of this project has been a life-changing experience by all means” -Jose Ramirez, Culture Corps Recipient spring 2003

"Our dictionary
project, although far from completion, is making gigantic strides
in the right direction thanks to the insights Ms. Reinertsen
provides and the discussions we have about the actual, contemporary
usages in Norwegian. These kinds of issues will prove to be
beneficial to all Norwegian language students at the University
of Minnesota and beyond."

"International
students expose the University community to a different type
of knowledge that we otherwise overlook."
