F-1 CPT/OPT Overview
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT is work authorization which allows a student to work in a job directly related to the student‘s major area of study before degree completion. CPT authorization is provided by ISSS and can be granted within 5 business days of application submission. Read more information about CPT.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT is work authorization which allows a student to work in a job directly related to the student‘s major area of study either before or after degree completion. The far majority of students use OPT to work after degree completion. OPT authorization is provided by USCIS and is usually granted within 2-3 months after the student submits an application. Please attend this workshop BEFORE meeting with an ISSS adviser. At the workshop, you will find out everything you need to know about F-1 Curricular and Optional Practical Training. Obtain the forms you need, ask questions, and learn from your fellow students' questions as well.
- learn basic rules, eligibility requirements, and application procedures
- listen to other students’ questions that you might not have thought of
- obtain application forms and assistance to complete them
- ask questions
These workshops are free. Registration
is not required.
